The German comic book "Mosaik" was first published in December 1955. It is the longest-running European monthly comic book and the only one originating in Eastern Germany that is still in production. Mosaik also appeared in other countries and other languages such as an English edition which was called "Mosaic". The series was created by Hannes Hegen who had approached East German publisher "Neues Leben" (East Berlin) with his ideas for Mosaik and the Digedags. He created the first issue which was to be pulished in December 1955. To support the schedule a team of additional artists, colorists and writers today known as the Mosaik-Kollektiv (Mosaik Collective) were hired. Only Hegen was credited on the cover, however.
