As comic book readers we already know: to read makes our speaking English good. This of course also goes for German or any other language. As an important icon of contemporary pop culture Lisa Simpson shares our views. Although she, of course, takes a very gloomy view of her brother Bart – the comic book nerd. To further her own education Lisa prefers the feminist approach. She rather goes for Emily Dickinson (not bad for an American) and Virginia Woolf – while Thomas Pynchon is less her style.
Springfield Girl Lisa Simpson Cuts the Mustard!Besides literature the hyper intellignt two-grader and jazz fan also promotes vegetarianism, environmentalism and human rights. She’ll definitely cut he mustard. So Matt Groening thinks, too, and alludes to greatness several times. In his future episode, „Bart to the Future“ (season 11/episode 7) which takes place in 2040 and aired March 2000, Lisa turns out Mrs. President of the United States. There you go! A wise choice indeed, as she will also be the first woman to move into the White House – as the boss. Utopia? Maybe – but still not so unworldly.
Now Lisa also grabs her daily F.A.Z. and cold-shoulders television for a much superior educational tool. As to why it even took so long for F.A.Z. to spot her for their mastermind-campaign – well – it beats me. The Simpsons' secret to succes is at least something we don’t have to ponder over much. It’s based on three words: clever – smart – intelligent. Well – actually that’s kind of the same word spelled differently three times – but still: 27 Emmy Awards and a Star on the Walk of Fame prove us right.
